The preliminary step to effective meditation lies in the power to visualise. It is the ability to use the powers of the imagination, plus mental energy, which then leads to creativity.
Visualisation is the first step in the law: ENERGY FOLLOWS THOUGHT.
Pictorial visualisation is a most potent exercise. When practised consciously it develops the ability to focus the mind. Little do we realise that visualisation occurs all the time but for many it takes the form of day-dreaming. The difference is that one process comes under the direction of the mind which provides a channel of energy which works out in three stages:
1. The gathering of energy in the centre of the head where certain creative centres are located.
2. The focussing of this energy under the power of attention.
3. The sending out of focused energy by means of a pictorial process in a particular direction.
Visualisation becomes most enjoyable if practised slowly and regularly. It may seem difficult and profitless at first, but with a little perseverance it becomes effortless and most effective.
Here is a a simple visualisation outline. Try it and see what happens.
Bring the mind to a steady and quiet point.
Use the creative imagination (our greatest tool) to ‘picture a form’ through visualisation.
Give life and direction to the form. (The chosen form may be anything at all: a point of light shining in a particular direction; a mountain top signifying a goal that is to be reached, or upon which you stand; a physical form representing a great Being or wise man). Whatever motivates or inspires you, use it.
The directed attention will hold the form and the purpose of the form; the soul intent which is a powerful energy is sent forth through the visualised form. Use the creative imagination to invoke whatever inspires you.
The entire process is one of energy-gathering, focalisation and distribution. The one requisite for success is just a few minutes practice everyday.
