It is clearly an observable fact that we are all at our individual stages of evolutionary development. Development is spoken of here in terms of consciousness: the varying individual states of awareness attained through sequential experience over many cycles of life and death.
If we are truthful with ourselves we would admit that there are some who stand on a higher rung of the evolutionary ladder than we do – perhaps they have spent more time in these three worlds of human endeavour and so have acquired more experience in life and living; there are others who seem to stand more or less on the same rung of the ladder; and others still, who appear to be situated – in terms of awareness – on a lower rung. ALL IS AT IT SHOULD BE!
The fundamental objective in all life experiences is to shift our level of consciousness from the point where it is onto levels which are higher. This is the purpose of the evolutionary drive innate in Life itself. This process of development can be left to the dictates of time and the evolutionary life processes, or it can be consciously accelerated through knowledge and aspiration.
For the average human being who is content to live life as it comes – and there are many so inclined – the evolutionary process takes effect through the day to day, life to life experiences; changes in consciousness occur much more slowly as we learn – or not – the lessons which life presents to us. In course of time, whatever is learnt becomes our natural habitat and normal human experience in these three worlds of daily expression. The level of consciousness attained in any one life is relegated to the realm of the subconscious and to the superconscious (for our Presence [the soul] retains the essence of all the goodness we ever achieve) and these become the natural response mechanism in the next life.
But for men and women of knowledge and aspiration the journey through life is different. The long-standing fascination for the objective world with its abounding glitter and glamour shifts to the subjective side of life with its subtler movements and progressions; conditions there on these higher planes are quite different in quality to those of the three worlds of definitely human evolution. They become sensitive to energies that are far more refined in nature and are at first incomprehensible because they are unfamiliar and unknown. As awareness expands in course of time and through right effort, they learn to stabilise consciousness upon the higher planes and discover eventually those subtle keys which open the doors to the floodlights of the higher realms.
The clear cold light of Reason is the key to the first door; this is experienced as intuitive insights to higher knowledge. Reason is pure perception of truth, uncoloured by any form of glamour or illusion.
The Will is the second key and coherent persistence opens the next door. This is not the persistence of the little self-will which ever obstructs the higher way, but is that Universal Will lying back as the cause of eventual liberation from all things. In reality, it is our own Will and there is much to discover about it.
The third door reveals finally the Oneness in which we all live, move and have our being and the key to open it is willing self-surrender.
It is has been said that “Life is stranger than fiction“, and those who have begun to sense – even if only faintly – the beauty, the mystery, and the higher vision of Life as it must surely stand in reality, will acquiesce to the absolute truth of this statement.
