EVERYONE NEEDS INNER SPACE

Sitting quietly in your room, in your own home, or somewhere peaceful, you feel master of yourself. Then people arrive and enter your space and before you know it an argument occurs, voices are raised, making you feel ill at ease and perhaps angry until you want to leave. Afterwards, you feel drained and it takes a few days before you feel normal again.

Whenever we are involved in heated arguments or in a state of high emotion, realize at once that it is not your true Self that is distressed.

We ask: what is it that makes us rush around in confusion, fear or anger. Stripping away all the names and excuses, what we see is some destructive form of energy taking over, and like a snake without eyes it lashes out at things in its way . . . it is an uncontrollable force that leads into dark and unknown places within ourselves. It is the same energy that causes volcanoes, earthquakes, and other disasters. In itself, energy is neutral but like the blind snake, if let loose, it bites and destroys. It is the same for nations as for individuals.

Let us recognise that ‘inner space’ within ourselves where no one is directing or telling us where to go and what to do. It is in this space that we find detachment from all forms of energy. No one can lead us there, we are born to be aware of what is there: the detached Observer within. It is sacred. It is where all things, all problems dissolve. It is where we go when we tell others we are tired and frightened and ‘fed up’. . . when we want to be left alone to find the space that allows us to live truly.

It is wise never to surrender this space to anyone or to anything. Daily meditation, quiet contemplation, and invocative prayer are direct pathways to that inner space where peace and sanity are ever found.
