Words from Spiritual Elders
“In order to embody a spiritual ideal, you must first comprehend its true dimensions. Then you must remove the gap between yourself and the ideal by becoming identified with it.
Let us take goodness, for example. Does goodness exist as an ideal outside of you? Or has its essence begun to permeate your awareness? An ideal is realized when it begins to live inside of you as a goal that shapes your thoughts and actions—until finally, it becomes part of who you are.
The Soul begins to break through the consciousness of the personality in a similar way, until it becomes your stable source of identity. If you still view the Soul as ‘the other self,’ we invite you to reflect deeply on a requirement of the Path.
To embody the Soul—the true self—requires a highly developed sense of responsibility, both for oneself and for others. Yet the personality often resists the call of the Soul, driven by a subconscious fear that self-sacrifice will be required.
This is the great struggle for those on the spiritual Path. The little self clamours for more comfort, more adventure, more material success, while the Higher Self cries: “Leave your father’s house and follow me.”
To leave one’s father’s house at this time is to step back from the fear of material loss that is now spreading through humanity. To “follow me” is to become one with the Soul. It is to step firmly into the flow of evolution, alongside other souls who are building a pathway into the new era.
Responding to the call of your Soul indicates that the higher aspect of your self is ready to assume responsibility for other lives.
