OUR MENTAL CONSTRUCTS – Contractions or Expansions?

A focussed thought is a mental construct with a definite purpose.

Are we aware of the quality of our thoughts and of the effects they have on others and on our own internal system . . . particularly those quiet ones that we think no one sees or knows about!?

Thought-forms are commonly created under the impulse of some strong feeling or desire; the mind stuff which is used to build these thought-forms is swept into activity by some strong desire, either good or bad, selfish or unselfish. There is a term for this particular type of thought process; it is called kaama-manas. Kaama means desire, and manas is mind: the desire/mind. In rarer cases, thought-forms are built under the light of pure reason which embodies an intuitive understanding of some universal truth. Pure creative thought is a conscious intent sent forth for the purpose of expansion. The sender surrenders the thought that it may find its mark.

If a strong thought-form remains within the mental aura of a person and is given undue attention until it looms very large, it can build a wall so dense that it shuts out reality and makes one a victim of the created thought. We call this obsession and there are many degrees of it. In such a situation the thought-form becomes more powerful than its creator and the individual becomes driven by it. We are familiar with cases like these, on a small and large scale.

A thought-form may find its way into another mind – say a weaker mind – or into a group aura of thought-forms motivated by the same idea/feeling. If the thoughts are founded in ignorance a contraction takes place within the weaker mind or within the group mind until a wall of thought-forms surrounds them, shutting out reality and clear thinking. Here is a clue to the causes of narrow-mindedness, arrogance, rigidity and fanaticism – both individual and group – and there are countless instances of this phenomena occurring everywhere. It has always existed in one form or another and has created, over time, the mental and emotional worlds in which many live. When thought-forms are founded on true understanding of what is right for one and all, there we will find expansion and a sense of freedom and goodwill towards all.

The power of thought is the key to existing ignorance and wisdom. If motivated by reason and intuition, love and wisdom will prevail. When motivated by blind instinct and desire, self-absorption and selfishness will reign. It is as clear-cut as that! What is often forgotten or ignored in our daily affairs is the fact that we are all ultimately responsible for our thought-forms – the good as well as the bad. What goes round will come round! If we remember this we will be more careful with our rebel thoughts and feelings and what we do with them!

-‘Tis he whose law is reason; who depends
Upon that law as on the best of friends;
When, in a state where men are tempted still
To evil, as a guard against worse ill,
He labours good on good to fix, and owes
To goodness every triumph that he knows.
He keeps true with a singleness of aim
And does not stoop, nor lie in wait
For wealth, honour, or worldly fame.

Wordsworth understood this simple truth!

  1. I am not sure that all thought forms have a purpose, many are lacking in focus. There is no direction to them, as such they are not creative thought, they are dissipative. This scattered thinking creates all sorts of anomalies. Many thoughts are an outcome of little will and not a higher purpose. The mental construct of “will” is a barrier to purpose. Any construct is simply that, a construct; purpose and intent need no construction. Perhaps Wordsworth is saying, be above the limitation and scaffolding of group mind, and he is perhaps pointing at singularity against a canvas backdrop of, same. He is saying be unique in an sea where all are parts, fear not your own unity and yet honour your own multiplicity; stay true to your inner-tuition. Be one among the many and, point clearly. Clarity is dawn.

    1. A thought is a construct containing meaning. The meaning, however, can be founded on true understanding or misunderstanding, as it often is. The life and soul of a thought-form is dependent on the level of being of the one who creates it. If consciousness can sustain a thought-construct – and that requires training – then it has the power to use it, either selfishly or unselfishishly. If it is lacking in focus, as you mention, then it is dissipated or floats about in the mental realm until it peters out; it may also be taken up by another mental body and be vitalised.

It is said that human beings fall into three main groups:
      1. Unthinking people who are entirely submerged in the tide of human existence, and are in the process of developing a true self consciousness.
      2. People who are working definitely on the side of materiality. Their interest in life is primarily the acquisition of material gain. For them the desired gain is achieved through planned thinking, and sometimes, deviously so!
      3. Those groups of people which constitute the unselfish and intelligent men and women in every field of enterprise.

The first group is unthinking; the two other groups have a working understanding of the laws of thought. Many of us in various sections of society are beginning to experience the expansion that comes through clearly directed thought. Perhaps this is so, as more of us stay true to our inner-tuition. Clarity, indeed, is dawn!
