THREE EYES: Two we know; one yet to see (Part I)

The human being possesses two physical eyes and a third eye which is situated within the etheric body, the higher counterpart of the physical body. As this third eye becomes active and functional it begins to register impressions which pour down from those subtler realms that lie beyond the personality ring-pass-not. Many of us are beginning to acknowledge that there is more to life than what we see, touch, hear, taste and smell in the physical, and our numbers are growing exponentially. Indeed, there is much more to Life than meets the two eyes!

The idea of there being a third eye is ancient and knowledge pertaining to it is no longer esoteric; we find books available in stores and on the internet which offer some information on the subject. Those who come upon the idea may find it strange and perhaps feel an inclination to dismiss the information as airy-fairy imaginings, born of new-age thinking. This is perfectly understandable for new ideas cannot take root in the mind and begin to make sense until there is a point of readiness and receptivity.

Just as the two physical eyes came into being in response to the light of the sun so long ago in the forgotten chasms of time, just so the third eye becomes activated at a later stage on the evolutionary cycle, and it does so in response to another light, the light of the soul which is veiled for aeons by the three undeveloped sheaths of the personality (the lower mind, astral/emotional, and physical bodies). These personality bodies, when non-integrated, block the higher light and make it very difficult for the physical brain to register the higher impressions which are always seeking to pour through: the coarser the personality bodies the more obscured is the light.

As the strength of the inner light increases through time and conscious aspiration towards that which is of a higher nature, steady purification of the three lower bodies is gained. It is this refinement of the three lower bodies which permits the third eye to become ever more active in the process of enlightenment, resulting in the registration by the physical brain cells of the Light of the soul. The force centre or chakra which is situated in the region of the etheric body between the two eyes is the apparatus responsible for the reception and direction of Light coming from the soul. It is one of the four higher centres in man which is instrumental to soul/personality integration.

The third eye is not a mechanism as are the two eyes which were developed to provide awareness of physical plane objects and activities. Our five physical senses, of which the two eyes are one, are attuned naturally to the objects of this world and are not equipped yet for the experience of that which lies in subtler realms. It is through the development of the third eye, which occurs inevitably in course of time and through the long evolutionary process, that a conscious connection is forged between the physical world and the inner subjective worlds. The third eye provides this specific function and becomes, in time, closely and directly related to the single eye of the spiritual man. This single eye is the mechanism for the soul to look through into the world of men.

The Constitution of Man is far more composite than the mere physical forms we see. Our past and present educational systems provide us with much knowledge of the physical body and its various functions; the fairly recent study of psychology educates us to some degree in the mechanisms of the mind and emotions and of the effects they have on the body; religious education tries to inform us of that which lies beyond these three worlds, and quite often in a limited and bigoted way. Yet, with all the information we have received and continue to receive in this age of global technology, many of us remain in ignorance of the ageless and vital knowledge concerning the soul and its mechanism, the third eye. Perhaps it is time for us to discover and understand better who we are and how we are constituted. In this present age that is rapidly unfolding before our eyes, the relative darkness of the mind in which we have lived for millennia will gradually disappear as we uncover the Truth as given in certain teachings and so begin to understand more clearly WHO we are and WHY we are.

Access to higher knowledge and the intuitive grasp of truth require an open, intelligent and educated mind-set that is ready to discard the old for the new; a mind that is free to some degree from the ancient and oppressive influences of glamour and illusion which are instrumental in obscuring the truth. There is much to understand in this vital field of metaphysics: the knowledge of who we are, why we are, where we have come from, and where we are heading. These are fundamental questions which should engage the thoughts of every intelligent human being, the pursuit of which, will most assuredly enrich the mind, steady the emotions, and bestow a worthy plan and purpose for living.
