THE SCIENCE OF IMPRESSION: Contact and Impact

Contact and Impact are the two conditions under which we live our lives and through which we find eventual liberation.

As we understand better the nature of forces and energies in our daily living, so we come to grasp intuitively the essential mechanics involved in this science of impression. Daily impacts evoke continual response in our physical, astral and mental mechanisms and we know consciously (or perhaps subconsciously) that we live and move in a veritable sea of forces, impacted daily by emanations and radiations from many different sources which we, in turn, radiate outwards, this radiation being conditioned, however, by our personal level of awareness and state of being.

Let us consider for a moment our physical responses to sense impacts. The five fields of sense impressions which we have learned to register automatically over time are received through the five sense mechanisms of hearing, touch, sight, taste and smell, and have opened to us great realms of knowledge and experience of things physical; we have evolved a tongue, for example, as a means of contact for those impressions within the realm of taste; the eye is the mechanism of contact for the reception of impressions within the realm of sight, and so forth.

The physical mechanisms for sense impressions are clearly explained to us by science, and it is an observable fact that these realms of activity have now fallen below the threshold of consciousness. We no longer strive to hear, touch, see, taste and smell physical plane impressions and they are now innate functions of our consciousness, having evolved over time and through a very long evolutionary process. The average human being is now fully equipped to contact all the impacts available within the dense physical realm and it is now simply a matter of conscious control in regard to the balancing of these impacts. Excessive contact and attachment to the pleasures of taste, for example, easily results in adverse bodily effects and we become overweight; similar repercussions will apply in regard to the overuse (or underuse!) of the other senses.

Through a similar process we have learned to contact and to respond to emotional stimuli: to those impacts that emanate from the realm of the astral (emotional). This is another dimension altogether and impressions are registered, not by our physical plane senses, but by other means of contact: the astral senses, which are not yet fully developed as are our physical senses. They are more subtle. I suppose one could relegate these astral senses to the field of psychic perception. Many of us are actually quite familiar psychically with the field of astral impacts, but perhaps we don’t yet acknowledge just how the senses work here. Some of us are more adept than others at registering these impacts, but it is only a matter of time and right process before we are all proficient here as we are in the physical.

Many are also rapidly reaching out towards the mental realm, as we learn to develop the tools required for effective exploration of this third and higher dimension. Consciousness is ever faced with great challenges as it hovers on the threshold of new realms of experience. It is, for example, just as challenging for the less-evolved consciousness to explore the astral, as it is for the more advanced when exploring the realms of the mind. The mental realm ever requires the powers of discernment and discrimination, and the function of the senses here must fall into a very different category altogether. As we learn to manage these senses correctly within each of the dimensions, so we will begin to encompass those impacts of higher realms which constitute for us, at this time, the Unknown.

Expansions in consciousness – whether we are aware of it or not – come about sequentially through a developing response to contact with something other than the Perceiver has earlier sensed. Through directed and conscious attention to sensed impacts, contacts develop in time into conscious interaction with that which is higher and ever revelatory in nature.

There are some in our world today who are beginning to contact realms beyond the mind through a form of spiritual telepathy; they are able to register those impacts which emanate from the soul itself. These impacts are unfamiliar to our consciousness and revelatory in nature, but they guarantee to those who respond, a range of experiences that are strange and unknown initially, but which are registered in good time as contact with the Higher Self which ever stands above.

The natural evolutionary process of reaching out occurred in the development of consciousness towards the physical dimension, and is occurring today in relation to the astral and mental; it is also occurring for many in regard to those realms which lie beyond these three. Contact is then the recognition of an area in consciousness that has been unknown previously but which now makes its presence felt.

In the very early stages of responsiveness to physical contacts and impacts, the first task on the evolutionary ladder entailed the development of the means of contact: the physical mechanisms for registering physical impacts. This development proceeded from cycle to cycle without any conscious awareness on our part, until little by little and over vast chasms of time, the awareness expanded to encompass not only the physical, but the astral and mental realms. All this we take for granted and have no clear idea of how we reached the point we are at. There are many in the world today who are encompassing an arena of perception which extends beyond these three worlds; a perception whereby the unit of Life becomes a truly ‘human’ being, self-directed and rightly motivated, and from which a super-human will emerge in consonance with the One Universal Mind and Heart.
This is our destiny.
