TELEPATHY: Our Modes of Communication

The medium through which all communication is forged is the ether; it is that substance in the universe which is subtler than the solids, fluids and gases of which all physical forms are composed. Synonymous with space and teeming with activity, ‘the ether, in reality, is nothing but energy. Its function is to receive energy impulses and to be swept into activity by these impulses emanating from some source‘. (Telepathy, AAB)

Ether manifests as the synthetic energy body of a planet through which all forms of life on the planet are connected. All life in our solar system is connected through the ether and ‘the power to communicate is to be found in the very nature of this substance’. Thus speak the wise. Every physical body has a corresponding etheric body, and this is true in regard to a single life particle and to the entire solar system as a whole. The individual etheric body of a form is an integral part of the etheric body of the planet in which it lives, and consequently, of the solar system. Through the ether all expressions of life are related and it is through this medium that the varying modes of communication become possible.

The etheric or vital system, as it is sometimes called, is a receiving agency; it is a circulating medium for energy emanating from the mind, from a group mind or from the soul; it is composed of myriads of threads of force or tiny streams of energy extending outward into the physical, inward to the emotional and mental planes and to the plane of the soul itself, and is held in relation to them by their coordinating effect. (Telepathy, AAB)

Visualise for a moment the human circulatory and nervous systems with their tiny capillaries, veins, arteries and nerves extending to every part of the human body and feeding each part with exactly what it needs. In a similar way the etheric matrix of energy filaments criss-cross everywhere, producing in the mental, emotional and physical bodies of all forms, the many varied effects we experience in our daily living.

The vital or etheric body acts as a bridge between the outer objective physical realm and the more subtle subjective realms. It receives energy impulses originating from many sources and swings the physical body into activity of some kind or another, depending on the nature and power of the type of energy that is dominating the etheric body at any particular time. This play of energy is constant behind the scenes of daily living, and had we the eyes to see we would be amazed by the continual effulgence of activity existing therein. We have only to visualise in the mind’s eye these multifarious threads of energy moving here, there and everywhere as modes of communication to get a sense of this subtle dimension.

Let us assume, if we are willing, that the ether is omnipresent and exists everywhere in space unseen. If we look with the creative imagination, we may visualise our physical forms and those of others on the planet infused with energy lines coming from many sources and moving outward in many directions at the same time; countless filaments of light connecting the mineral, vegetable and animal forms, the human form, and the planet itself; visualise these energy lines connecting to and from the astral and mental planes, from the plane of the soul, and to and from Those advanced Beings on higher levels Who are connected to us here on the planet.

All these energies flow continually within the collective consciousness through the omnipresent ether, just as the blood flows naturally within a physical body. Visualise the wide range of energies passing ceaselessly to and fro and from one point to another. If the etheric dimension exists in a more subtle form than the gross physical, time there would play out differently than it does in the physical. Communication between two points within the ether would be more immediate so that the experience of time, space and distance, as we know it in the physical, would be very different.

It has been said that the word telepathy is synonymous with the etheric world and will only be understood as the nature of forces and of energy currents are better acknowledged. First, we need to become more awake to the idea that we live in a veritable sea of forces playing continually on and within our consciousness. Second, we need to understand how the human being is constituted, and not just from the point of view of the physical. We know a great deal about our gross material body, but there is far more to unravel about the subtler bodies which make the human being what he is today.

As we begin to understand better, who and what we are, and the different ways in which we function, much of what now holds us in ignorance will be transcended. Perhaps the next step for mankind lies in a better understanding of his truly marvellous constitution, and particularly in relation to the Laya centres: that intricate and fascinating organisation of energy chakras lining the etheric body and by which the various modes of communication (which we take completely for granted) are forged. These centres are instrumental in the reception and broadcasting of feelings, thoughts, ideas, and those impressions which descend from higher realms.

Let us discuss the three types of telepathy which produce differing modes of activity and which tap differing areas of communication.

The unthinking, non-mental men and women can be and often are telepathic, but the line of communication between them is forged from one etheric body to the other. The area around the solar plexus (the third chakra from the base, situated in the abdominal region of the etheric body) is most sensitive to the impact of etheric energy. This first type of telepathy is called Instinctive Telepathy and concerns those instincts and feelings that are received and radiated from the solar plexus chakra, which is in direct ‘touch’ with the feeling body upon the emotional plane. An example of this kind of communication is best illustrated by the telepathic rapport existing between a mother and her child who is in danger. It is purely instinctive and the impulses are propelled by the solar plexus centre through the ether over long distances, if necessary, and are received also through the solar plexus centre of the recipient. Another indication of instinctual telepathy is illustrated by the common expression, “I have a funny feeling . . .” and other similar phrases. These are, however, more emotional in their involvement and work through feeling substance.

The second kind of telepathic communication is that of mind to mind, and for there to be clear rapport of this kind between two people, requires that they be mental types. This mode of communication is called Mental Telepathy and the more that emotion and strong feelings are absent the more accurate is the communication. Mental telepathy is not common, as is the type discussed above, and manifests only in the educated classes. As we learn to function more directly through clear thought uninterrupted by emotions so will mental rapport between people become more definite, for in the stillness of the mind impressions are more readily perceived. The throat chakra is the active centre in this mode of contact, and being the perfect medium of all creative work it is used to communicate the meaning inherent in clearly defined thought. It often happens on many occasions, however, that a more mental type will enter into rapport with a person who is emotionally dominant and who uses primarily the solar plexus centre as a mode for communication. From these encounters confusion alone will result. The two parties are using different centres to communicate and are both sensitive to certain types of force and are therefore closed to each other. This occurs frequently between married couples and in other similar relationships. Sometimes, two mentally polarised persons are unable to communicate because one is intensely occupied with some mental problem or oppressed by emotional strain. We can see immediately how useful it would be to understand better the different functions of the chakra system within the etheric body.

The third mode of telepathic communication is that from soul to soul or soul to mind, and is the eventual outcome of true meditation and a life of service and discipline. It is said to be the highest form of telepathy available to incarnated man and is responsible for all the inspired writings, art, music, insights and revelations that have entered our world. This mode of communication is called Intuitive Telepathy and is only possible in a soul-integrated personality, one in which soul, mind and brain have been brought into alignment. This form of telepathy uses the head and throat centres of those who are communicating, and the energy of pure love which is distinctive of the soul. It is quite rare in comparison to the other forms of telepathic communication and requires complete freedom from solar plexus activity and the habitual feelings that enter that centre from the emotional plane.  The ajna centre, situated between the eyebrows, receives intuitional impressions from above and transmits them using the throat centre as the formulater of thought.

There is much to discover about the true constitution of man, the etheric body with its chakra system, and the various modes of communication that are possible for us.

1. The development of ‘higher telepathic communication’ in an individual is demonstrated in the alignment of soul, mind, and brain.

2. The development of telepathic communication between individuals is demonstrated:

a. Between solar plexus and solar plexus, and so, purely emotional;
b. Between mind and mind, and therefore, mental;
c. Between soul and soul, and so spiritual;
d. In very advanced people, between all three aspects. (Telepathy, AAB)

Finally, there are other forms of telepathic communication existing between Those Beings Who have transcended the human condition and those who are beginning to forge communication with Them.

  1. Yes. More and more of us are becoming consciously aware of this mental mode of communication. We use the word ‘hunch’ or other similar words, but it is actually telepathy.
