One Who Saw Beyond the Colour of Skin

A tribute to a beautiful soul . . .

🐚

β€œCol. Robert Shaw led the first all-black unit of the Union Army, called the 54th Massachusetts regiment. He promised his troops equal treatment and urged them to reject their salary until it matched the wages of white troops.

After he was killed, Confederates didn’t return his body, they put him in a mass grave with his men. It was meant as an insult for leading black soldiers, however, in response his father said:

“We can imagine no holier place than that in which he lies, among his brave and devoted followers, nor wish for him better company.”

The story of Shaw and his men was depicted in the 1989 Oscar-winning film, Glory.”

Bless His beautiful soul . . .

Col. Robert Shaw
