The New Syrian Parliament
70 seats that could tip the balance… What is President Ahmad al-Shara’ planning for the new parliament?
With rapid and bold strides, Damascus is on the verge of writing an entirely new political chapter that will reshape the domestic landscape. And with the first details emerging regarding the date of the first parliamentary session on 8 June, all attention is turning to the ‘presidential third’ that everyone is awaiting.
The list of 70 seats, to which President Ahmad al-Shara is putting the finishing touches, does not appear to be merely a matter of traditional appointments, but rather a meticulous strategic manoeuvre aimed at filling the gaps and ensuring the inclusion of balanced and influential figures from across the Syrian spectrum, whilst increasing the representation of major cities and strengthening the presence of women, so that the next parliament may serve as a true reflection of the country’s political future.
